About Rock Hill:

Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina and a satellite city of Charlotte, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 49,765. According to 2004 estimates the city has a population of 57,902. The city is included in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord metropolitan statistical area, which has a population of 1,474,734 according to the 2004 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Rock Hill is located at 34°56'17" North, 81°1'34" West (34.938094, -81.026080).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 80.4 km2 (31.1 mi2). 80.4 km2 (31.0 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

Rock Hill Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 49,765 people, 18,750 households, and 12,093 families residing in the city. The population density is 619.2/km2 (1,603.8/mi2). There are 20,287 housing units at an average density of 252.4/km2 (653.8/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 58.74% White, 37.33% African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,750 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 14.8% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,336, and the median income for a family is $45,697. Males have a median income of $32,156 versus $24,181 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,929. 14.0% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
